Regulatory Changes Explained

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) passed new regulations on lighting that go into effect this summer. Here’s the latest on that new lighting regulation:

  • DOE added new definitions of incandescent and general service lamps.
  • Most incandescent and halogen bulbs do not meet new GSL or GSIL requirements.
  • Lights that don’t meet the new requirements cannot be sold after July 31, 2023.

Find out if the lighting you have is being phased out and what to do about it. Learn more on our Industry Alert page.

California Bans Additional Bulbs

Some states are also phasing out specific kinds of bulbs. Following Vermont’s CFL phase-out, California recently passed AB-2208, which bans the sale of screw-in and bayonet base CFLs. This new regulation goes into effect January 1, 2024. The new CA law will also ban pin-base compact and linear fluorescent lamps, effective January 1, 2025.
